You can use .value, as:

var textarea = document.getElementById('textareabox');

var word = 'something';

var textValue=textarea.value;  //-> don't use .innerHTML since there is no HTML in a textarea element

if (textValue.indexOf(word)!=-1)
{
  alert('found')
}
