Until recently querying city-level data with gtrendsR worked fine. Now when running a specific city (e.g. NYC) like this

gtrends('soccer', time = '2020-01-05 2021-01-11', gprop = 'web', geo = 'US-501')

I get the following error

Error in get_widget(comparison_item, category, gprop, hl, cookie_url, :
 widget$status_code == 200 is not TRUE

This uses the latest country name version with the state value eliminated (i.e. US-501 and not US-NY-501). The query works fine for a state (e.g. US-NY) or country (e.g. US).

Does anyone know what the issue is?
